Voluntourism is a contemporary tourism concept that has helped many people travel to destinations they would otherwise not afford. It involves a-would-be-tourist volunteering his/her services to a tour company or a tour group for free and in return, he/she will get a chance to visit all the places that the group will go.

A case for Voluntourism

Voluntourism is a contemporary tourism concept that has helped many people travel to destinations they could otherwise not afford. It involves a-would-be-tourist volunteering his/her services to a tour company or a tour group for free and in return, he/she will get a chance to visit all the places that the group will go.

Most people volunteer for such services as translation, photography, video recording, tour guide, cooking, personal assistants etc. Aside from getting the chance of visiting exotic places with some rich people, a person who volunteers his or her services derives a lot of advantages.

The first obvious one is that he will not have to pay for boarding fees, transport fees and venue entry fees. This means for a simple service of taking pictures for the rich people, the volunteer will get first class services at no cost to him.

Voluntourism also helps a person gain some special skills. In the example given above, a person gets to be a perfect photographer by having hundreds of hours of free apprenticeship. Actually, he gets to know what real customers demand of a professional photographer. Who knows, he might even decide that photography is what he loves doing. For those who get the chance to be tour guides, learning about a destination is a must. They have to read a wide range of content and documents about the destination. Of course this knowledge remains with them even after the tour.

Mingling with rich people can be a chance to land a very well-paying job. In this regard, a person who volunteers his services must offer the best services to the people in the group so as to attract their attention. You never know, you might be serving your future boss. If he likes you, you will not even need to go through the rigorous interview process.

Sometimes, especially on cruises, life can start to get boring. The ship is in the high seas and there is nothing to do apart from lazing around. However, volunteers will always have something to do. This keeps them busy throughout the trip even when the people they are supposed to serve are bored.

So is voluntourism a good thing or not? I thinks that it is one of the greatest inventions of modern tourism.
